Today I visited Rachel and Lee’s Garden in Glen Allen.

Rachel and Lee by some seedlings
Early spring crops are starting to show; asparagus, onions, garlic, spinach and kale.

They also had many seedlings waiting to be transplanted.

Lee is constructing a new chicken coop in anticipation of new chicks that they are going to receive shortly–their current hens were starting to eat the eggs.

The chicken coop is moved regularly, providing ample fertilizer for new crops. In addition to using chickens, Rachel and Lee receive leaves and other compost material from their neighbors to help fertilize the soil. In return, they share produce with their neighbors.
Rachel and Lee also raise honey bees (although the cold winter killed their current hives). The bees help polinate the fruits and vegetables on their property.
