Red Dog Farm grows vegetables for the Ashland farmers market. The farm is operated by Bruce and his wife Nancy, Bruce is seen below pulling up pea plants to prepare a new row.web_pullingpeas Bruce grows produce in four main areas:

The first area is dedicated to raised beds, which receive no chemical fertilizer and are organic.

The second, and main growing area does receive some chemical fertilizer because the ground is sandy and does not hold nutrients very well.

The third area is a test field that Bruce currently has cover crops on in hopes that he can eventually use it to grow vegetables without any non-organic inputs (like chemical fertilizer).

The fourth area surrounds the other fields and holds fruit trees, asparagus patches, grapes and cucumbers.

There is also an herb garden and plenty of flowers throughout the property to keep the bees busy and our eyes happy.

I visited the farm during a time of transition between spring and summer crops. The onions were flowering on their way out:

The asparagus was going to seed, below is actually a wild asparagus patch, predating Bruce’s cultivation:

And the cauliflower was also on its way out (without ever producing any edible cauliflower)web_cauliflower-seeding

On their way in are tomatoes, peppers, corn and many other summer staples. To learn more visit Bruce at the Ashland market.
