Trail’s End Farm is located in Montpelier, VA and provides produce at Richmond area farmers markets. The farm is owned and operated by the Cantrell’s.

Trail’s End is certified Naturally Grown and, in addition to growing vegetables, raises chickens and goats.

The goats are kept in their pen by a solar-powered electric fence. The goats are rotated regularly to clear field and fertilize field space. The photograph below is a “before and after” of how well the goats clear a field.

The chickens are also rotated on a regular basis and help fertilize fields, control pests and provide eggs. Below are some of the Cantrell’s finishing up cleaning and feeding the chickens.

Many of the vegetable rows on the farm use drip irrigation, but in other rows the vegetables are watered with sprinklers.

Every row does not have drip irrigation because the Cantrell’s simply did not have enough time to put it in. Too much to do in too little time is a very common problem at many of the farms that I visit.
